Project Leader, Strawberry Breeder, NIAB EMR

Senior fruit breeder, with over 20 years of experience in genetic improvement and varietal development in cultivated strawberry.  Adam is currently involved in all aspects of strawberry breeding at NIAB EMR and is currently project managing and leading the scientific direction of the East Malling Strawberry Breeding Club (EMSBC) programme, a public-private consortium involving key industry partners from the UK and Europe.

Past research activities have centered on Defra- and AHDB-commissioned projects related to genetic improvement in strawberry, and these have included: meristem culture for the elimination of Phytophthora cactorum, production of somaclonal variants of strawberry for improved skin colour, developing a breeding strategy for genotypes to be used in the programmed-cropping system and carrying out variety trials on strawberry. Key varieties released have included the short-day cultivar, ‘Malling™ Centenary’ which has been adopted as the UK industry standard cultivar and selling in excess of 65 million plants per annum.
